Имя Людмилы Улицкой довольно широко известно российскому читателю. Повесть «Сонечка» является дебютным произведением писательницы. В центре сюжета – судьба женщины по имени Сонечка. В более общем контексте, как и во многих других произведениях, Улицкая пишет о жизни советской интеллигенции. На протяжении повествования описана жизнь Сонечки, ее детство и ее любовь к книгам, работа в библиотеке, жизнь в эвакуации, замужество, рождение ребенка. Пристрастившись с детства к чтению, Сонечка долгое время живет в книжном, ненастоящем мире, пока судьба не посылает ей знакомство с необычным человеком, бывшим политическим заключенным художником Робертом Викторовичем, за которого Сонечка выходит замуж и не перестает удивляться и благодарить судьбу за эту встречу. На смену книгам приходят повседневные xлопоты, забота о муже и воспитание дочери. С благодарностью и любовью гораздо позже принимает Сонечка и появление в ее жизни девочки Яси, подруги ее дочери, которая становится последней любовью Роберта Викторовича... Эта трогательная история о том, как многогранны и непредсказуемы могут быть проявления любви, написана простым и искренним языком и она не оставит читателя равнодушным.

The name of Ludmila Ulitskaia is well known to Russian readers. The short novel "Sonechka" is the first literary work of this renowned writer. In the center of the plot is the life of а woman named Sonechka. In a more general context, this story as many Ulitskaia’s works is about the life of the Soviet intelligentsia. The book describes Sonechka’s life, her childhood and her love for reading, her work in the library, evacuation, marriage, birth of a child. Early infatuated by reading, Sonechka for a long time lives in a bookish, unrealistic world until she meets an unusual man, an ex political convict and artist Robert Viktorovich. They get married and Sonechka cannot stop thanking the fate for this gift. She starts living a "real" life with everyday problems taking care of her husband and her daughter. Later on she also thankfully accepts the appearance in her life of a young girl Yasia, her daughter’s friend, who becomes her husband’s last love. This touching story of how multifaceted and unpredictable love can be is written in a very simple and very sincere language and you will definitely be moved by it.

Это книга про мечту, которая становится реальностью, красивая сказка о мечтательной девушке Ассоль, которая одна верит в обещанное ей когда-то счастье и ее мечта сбывается. Она встречает своего принца, молодого капитана Грэя, который приплывает к ней под алыми парусами. Несмотря на фееричность повествования, в сказке есть урок: чудеса случаются, если очень сильно в них верить.

In his books, Green created an imaginary world full of adventures, travels, and romantic characters. This world is sometimes referred to as "Greenland." It has cities with strange names like Zurbagan, Liss and Herton; it has the Great Ocean and the Bay of Storms. Green’s characters are seamen, gold diggers, travelers, and artists.
Red Sails is one of the most famous books by Green. It is about a dream that comes true, a beautiful tale about a romantic girl named Assol. She is the only one who believes in the happiness that was foretold to her, and her dream becomes a reality. She meets her prince, a young captain Gray, who comes to her on a ship under the red sails. Despite the fantastic plot, this fairy tale has a moral: miracles happen if one really believes in them.

Василий Шукшин, aвтор рассказов и повестей, актер, режиссер и киносценарист советского времени, был одним из тех людей, которые талантливы во многих жанрах. Сам выходец из деревни, он посвятил свое творчество сельской жизни. Первый сборник рассказов Шукшина, вышедший в 1963 году, так и назывался «Сельские жители».
Несмотря на то, что творчество Шукшина часто относят к разряду деревенской прозы, его герои и сюжеты не типичны для этого жанра. Как правило его герои люди странные, необычные, с оригинальной жизненной философией. В этом видна связь и с русской фольклорной традицией, где героем как известно часто выступает дурак. Вот герой рассказа «Чудик» все время попадает в смешные и глупые ситуации, и сам мучается от того, что он не такой как все. В детстве он мечтал стать шпионом, а сейчас работает киномехаником в селе. Ну совсем не типичный «труженик села». Или герой другого рассказа «Психопат», который работает библиотекарем и считает, что все проблемы современного общества от того, что люди перестали читать Толстого и Чехова. В рассказе «Миль пардон, мадам!» герой рассказывает приезжим из города, которых он сопровождает на охоте, не привычные охотничьи байки, а историю о своем неудачном покушении на Гитлера во время войны.
Интерес Шукшина к кино просматривается и в его рассказах, в краткости слога, точности описания эмоций героев и живом диалоге. Несмотря на просторечные слова, которыми изобилует проза Шукшина, его рассказы читаются легко и с удовольствием и вы не раз посмеетесь над коллизиями его чудаковатых героев.
English Review
Vasili Shukshin, author, actor, director and screenwriter of the Soviet time, was one of those people talented in many genres. Born in a peasant family, he dedicated his work to the life of the countryside. No wonder the first collection of stories by Shukshin, released in 1963, had the title "Village residents." Despite the fact that Shukshin is often considered to be a "village writer," his characters, as well as his plots, are not typical for the country prose style. Usually his characters are oddballs, strange people who have a unique philosophy on life. One can trace a connection to the Russian folk tradition of having a fool as the main character of folk tales. For example, the character of the story "Chudik" ("Crank") always gets into stupid and funny situations and suffers from not being like others. In childhood he dreamed of becoming a spy and now works as a movie projectionist in his village. What an atypical "country worker!" Or take another character, a librarian from the story "Psikhopat" ("Psychopath") who thinks that all the problems of modern society come from people not reading Tolstoy and Chekhov any more. In yet another story "Mille Pardons, Madame!" a hunting guide always tells his clients from the city a tale, not the usual hunting story, but of his failed attempt to assassinate Hitler during World War II.
Shukshin’s interest in film considerably influenced his writing style with its simple, precise descriptions of emotions and lively dialogue. Despite frequent use of village dialect, Shukshin’s stories are an enjoyable read, and he will often make you laugh at the collisions of his eccentric characters.

A chance meeting at the notorious Yalta resort changes the lives of the two main characters forever. Anna and Gurov, both married, are haunted by memories of their clandestine affair. They contrive to be together, but are repressed by the norms and morals of 19th century Russian society. This short story does not have your typical fairytale ending. Instead, Anton Pavlovich Chekov cleverly leaves the conclusion open to the reader's interpretation.

During the Space Race, Omon Ra is dying to become a Soviet cosmonaut. His enthusiasm is not dampened even when he learns that Soviet rocket engineers can get him safely to the moon but have no way of returning him to earth. Or do they? Having to distinguish the real from the unreal in Omon Ra's world might suggest a long, dark descent into the bowels of modern Russian surrealism. But Pelevin is the genre's current reigning master, and his style in this novella is light and quite readable. Хочется порекомендовать почитать романы из серии книг о приключениях сыщика Эраста Фандорина, которые представляют литературный проект Георгия Чхартишвили, творящего под псевдонимом Бориса Акунина. Читатели России познакомились с Эрастом Фандориным в конце 1990-х, когда вышли первые книги из серии, «Азазель» и «Турецкий гамбит».
Действие романов происходит в России в последние десятилетия 19 века, а сам Эраст Петрович предстает в разные периоды своей жизни – от юного письмоводителя в московском Сыскном управлении до чиновника особых поручений при московском генерал-губернаторе. Личность он конечно же незаурядная и даже загадочная. Порой Фандорин является читателю неким супергероем. Он умен, проницателен, владеет всевозможными приемами борьбы и всеми видами оружия. Мы знаем, что какое-то время своей жизни он провел в Японии, его везде сопровождает преданный японец-камердинер Маса. Он в совершенстве владеет японским, это тоже добавляет загадочности его образу. Однако до романа «Алмазная колесница» эта часть биографии Фандорина остается нам неизвестной.
Эрасту Петровичу патологически везет ‑ он всегда выигрывает в азартные игры и побеждает на дуэлях. Вместе с тем, он скромен, деликатен и даже иногда застенчив. Его личная жизнь отмечена трагедией ‑ невеста Эраста Петровича погибает от взрыва террористов в день свадьбы. Важен и патриотический настрой романов. Эраст Петрович служит России, не ради славы или денег, а из чистой любви к родине и желания помочь ей. Итак, самой личности героя достаточно чтобы заинтриговать читателя. Добавьте к этому увлекательнейшие детективные сюжеты и язык, стилизованный под 19 век, и получится довольно интересный продукт, которым до сих пор зачитываются читатели, и не только в России, ведь Акунинские творения уже переведены и на другие языки. И несмотря на то, что Акунина много критиковали, обвиняя в чрезмерном увлечении стилизацией, на то это и литературный проект, чтобы создать доступную, увлекательную массовую литературу, которая вместе с тем должна удовлетворять интеллектуальные потребности читателя.

Azazel and The Turkish Gambit

I would like to recommend reading the novels from a series of adventures of the detective Erast Fandorin, which represent a literary project of Georgii Chkhartishvili writing under the name of Boris Akunin. The Russian audience got acquainted with Fandorin at the end of the 1990s when the first books in the series came out, “Azazel” and “The Turkish Gambit.”
The action in the novels is set in Russia in the last decades of the 19th century and Erast Petrovich himself is pictured at different periods of his life, from a simple clerk in the Moscow Police Department to a special agent working for the Governor of Moscow. He is certainly not an ordinary man and his personality is quite mysterious. At times he is almost presented to the reader as some kind of superhero. He is shrewd and intelligent, he has superior fighting skills and can masterly handle all kinds of weapons. We know that he spent some time in Japan and he is always escorted by a faithful Japanese servant Masa. He speaks perfect Japanese which adds even more mystery to his enigmatic personality. However, we do not know much about this period in his biography before the novel “The Diamond Chariot.”
Erast Petrovich is pathologically lucky and he always wins in gambling or duels. At the same time he is a modest, delicate and at times shy person. His personal life is marked by a tragedy – his bride dies from a terrorist explosion on their wedding day. The patriotic mood of the novels is also important. Erast Petrovich is serving his motherland, not for fame or money but for the pure love of Russia and the desire to make his country better. So the personality of the main character is already intriguing enough to make the reader interested. Add here the most captivating plots and the stylized for the 19th century language and you get a very interesting product which still attracts readers not only in Russia, but in other countries as well since Akunin’s novels have been translated into other languages. And despite criticism that Akunin’s works are overly stylized, the literary project was to create accessible and exciting mass literature that would at the same time respond to the intellectual needs of the reading audience. I think Akunin reached this goal and Erast Petrovich, as many literary characters, started to live a life of his own. Full texts of some of the novels are available online at http://www.akunin.ru.
